Breakaway Training is owned and operated by Julie Browning.

Julie Browning is no stranger to training, coaching and racing. Julie has over 20 years of experience as both an athlete and a coach. Her healthy, integrated and balanced approach has been developed over the years to help athletes reach peak performance while maintaining functionality and safety.

Born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent , England, Julie started her athletic career swimming for the Biddulph Swimming Club and Biddulph High School. She competed in local and regional swim meets before taking up cross-country running and shooting to be able to compete in Modern Triathlon events. As a junior Julie was part of a team that competed at the National Modern Triathlon event for several years and medaled for most of the years they competed.
This eventually evolved into the full Modern Pentathlon (equestrian show jumping, fencing, swimming, shooting, and cross-country). Julie established herself as top junior Modern Pentathlete traveling to compete all over England . She was selected to compete on the British Junior National Team at the German Nationals where she placed second overall.

In 1987 Julie attended Edge Hill College where she focused on swimming and competing at the British Students Swim meet. In her final year of college she medaled in the 200 meters freestyle. Graduating in 1990 with Bachelor of Science degrees in both Geography and Physical Education, Julie then moved to the United States to become an au pair. Her first home was with a great host family in Maryland .

From 1991 to 1993 Julie completed her masters degree in Applied Geography at New Mexico State University . It was here her triathlon career started while being mentored by a local veteran of the sport.

In 1994 Julie moved to Corvallis , Oregon to attend Oregon State University as an instructor for several physical activity classes (swimming, fencing, and aerobic conditioning). While at Oregon State Julie continued graduate level study in exercise physiology.

A job offer in 1995 to work with the BLM and Forest Service on remote sensing mapping projects turned into an 8 year long position. This work gave Julie the flexibility to train and race. Finally it was time for a new challenge and for Julie to pursue a career in another field she is passionate about – coaching and training triathlon and cycling athletes. Breakaway Training was established in January 2003.

Running with runners (road, track and cross-country), swimming with swimmers (age group, college, open water) and riding with cyclists (road races, mountain bike races, time trials, criteriums and stage races) has given Julie a unique perspective and insight to each of these sports. Putting all these three together she has have become a strong balanced cyclist and triathlete allowing her to successfully compete at national and international events over the last 10 years.
