Biomechanical Evaluation & Gait Analysis

DeeAnn Dougherty is a local physical therapist, athlete, running coach, and yoga teacher. She offers the following service:

Biomechanical Evaluation and Treatment
Repetitive training such as running and cycling, often lead to muscular strength and flexibility imbalances. An example of this would be a cyclist’s quadriceps muscles (front of thigh) becoming highly developed, and the smaller stabilizing muscles like the adductors and abductors (inner and outer thigh) becoming weak in comparison. Similarly, this imbalance can exist in terms of flexibility, where a runner’s calves and hamstrings become very tight and strong while the quadriceps becomes relatively weak. Persistent training can drive these imbalances to the point of injury.

A biomechanical evaluation will help identify any imbalances an athlete has in terms of alignment, flexibility and strength. Specific stretches and strengthening exercises will be recommended to help minimize and correct these imbalances, improving overall athleticism. Running gait will be assessed, and advice on running shoe selection offered. Matching the correct shoe to a runner's foot is one of the most effective ways of reducing the risk of injury.

Custom orthotics. Orthotics are shoe inserts that control abnormal movement of the foot, allowing it to function more efficiently. Orthotics are used to treat and prevent injuries.
